In reading the news on the latest information regarding Johnson & Johnson’s lawsuits/products, unfortunately I was not surprised as this is a recurring theme in the cosmetics industry. To me, as a mom, woman, and stylist, I would think that more cosmetic companies would want women and children (families) to be safe and healthy. Not to expose them to carcinogens and estrogenic compounds, which can harm an entire family regardless of age or gender. It is our responsibility in creating products for people to be a plus, not a minus, and to always put our consumers first. Money and self-gain shouldn’t be the driving force in creating cosmetics. I believe that putting our Sprout family first helps with longevity, health, and happiness. With this approach, we make the best products that families will want to use on a daily basis, while not having to worry about safety.

"She told me, 'I’m not doing this for myself,'" Mr. Robinson said. "She knows she's going to die. She's doing this for other women. She wants to do something good before she leaves." Here is an emotional and shocking excerpt from Mark Robinson, Lawyer of Ms. Eva Echeverria who was recently awarded $417 million in damages after developing ovarian cancer after using the company's trademark Johnsons Baby Powder on her perineum for decades.

Johnson & Johnson is not taking responsibility for their actions and saying anything they can to keep their brand relevant and desirable. Please read https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/woman-gets-417-million-verdict-johnson-johnson-baby-powder-cancer-n794771 for more information.

If I used a “baby powder”, I would use organic corn starch as it’s much safer, it works, and widely available. As for bathing a baby or using a baby shampoo, I use Original Sprout Hair and Body Babywash. It is formaldehyde-free because we always test all of our products to make sure it is safe for everyone to use. We make certain all of our products are “EU compliant” because in Europe, cosmetics are HIGHLY regulated for safety. I make sure to keep the exact same standards worldwide. We do NOT have different formulas for different countries.

We at Original Sprout extend our deepest condolences to the victims of ovarian cancer and we will stay vigilant in our commitment to safe and healthy products for the entire family.  "Worry-free luxury" has always been our motto and knowing that we can relax and enjoy bath time is just one less thing to worry about. Naturally, safety and professional performance is our top priority.

Shampoos, conditioners, styling aids, and skin cleansers usually contain toxic contaminants and carcinogens. These toxins can penetrate the skin, entering the bloodstream through open pores and hair follicles, resulting in hair fallout, dry scalp, dry and damaged hair, hair loss, color brassiness and fading, eczema, acne, and dermatitis to name a few. The most common source of drying, skin disrupting surfactants is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), dubbed a natural and organic cleanser from coconuts which makes thick foam and a rich lather. SLS is used in most shampoos, skin cleansers, car washes, household cleansers, industrial garage cleaners, and degreasing agents. SLS and propylene glycol also act as skin penetrating agents (allowing other toxins to enter the bloodstream). Simply said, "more bubbles mean more troubles and tangles!"

The EPA has found hormone disrupting chemicals in shampoos and skin cleansers touted as "natural" and "organic." Some of the most common disrupters are parabens and unregulated fragrance which have proven to wreak havoc in our endocrine system and organs. Toxins are easily absorbed into our skin where they bypass our liver, entering directly and quickly into our bloodstream. Shampoo and Conditioner toxins enter into our bodies via blood vessels, millions of sweat glands, and billions of nerve endings.

The FDA Regulations (21 CFR Sec. 740.10) state "Each ingredient used in a cosmetic product and each finished cosmetic product shall be adequately substantiated for safety prior to marketing. Any such ingredient or product whose safety is not adequately substantiated prior to marketing is misbranded unless they state the following conspicuous statement on the principal display panel:

The problem with many of these "natural" shampoos is that they typically don’t clean very well and form scum by reacting with calcium and magnesium ions present in water. This leaves a residue making our hair feeling unclean, dull and lifeless. Moreover, the pH of soap-based cleansers ranges about 8-9 which damages our hair, dries our skin and scalp.

As a pioneer in Natural, Organic, Vegan hair, skin care, styling, and bath products I am unwavering in my quest to create products free of harmful contaminants, carcinogens, allergens, and other toxins. As the founder of "The Original Sprout” I adhere to the safety-based EU (European) Compliance which is strictly regulated. We sell in the UK in "Harrods" of London. Our best known client is, in fact, part of Britain’s Royal Family--Kate Middleton and Prince William's son, Prince George!

Having heard of our strict adherence to safety guidelines, Walt Disney Inc. called us. They had tested several large hair care companies before contacting us and, frankly, they were quite frustrated. Safety was their biggest concern, for obvious reasons. In partnership with Walt Disney Inc. we had our biggest selling hair care products clinically tested by 2 (two) separate F.D.A. certified third party laboratories. The purpose of our testing was to assess and prove the safety of our products on human subject volunteers over an extended period of time. The results were to determine the irritation and sensitization (contact allergy) and safety to the skin and body. The test results are available on our website for review. The bottom line is: our tested products were certified as “Allergy Safe.” We now have a new partner with Disney due to the safety of our tested products!

Post date: November 13, 2016

The hair care product industry is a very competitive business and unfortunately even under the most stringent of compliance guidelines here in the USA which is the “Safe Cosmetics Program & Prop 65 “,  (please see http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/cosmetics/Pages/default.aspx (link is external) the vast majority of hair care products (shampoos, conditioners, styling gels, etc.) are actually not nearly as safe as consumers are led to believe.  Companies use words like “Natural”, “Organic”, “Vegan”, non-GMO, gluten free, toxin free  giving a sometimes false impression of safety and quality when the opposite is quite often the case. Reading the ingredient label can be a good first step however not all hair care products have full disclosure of their ingredients. This means you might be getting harmful or even potentially dangerous toxins without your knowledge or consent.

The reason this practice is common here in the US is the industry itself is not nearly protective enough or restrictive enough. This is a result of lax regulation, out-dated research, and a general lack of education and concern for the consumer by the regulatory agencies. As a result the consumers suffer.  In Europe, for example they have banned over 1,500 endocrine disrupting, mutanogenic & carcinogenic ingredients from cosmetics manufactured or sold there.  They take a much more proactive consumer protection approach which is a more stringent method to make certain consumers are not harmed unknowingly by unscrupulous or substandard manufacturers of hair products.

The shampoo promising you thick, luxurious, beautiful hair might be actually damaging your hair with toxic chemicals and even carcinogens. Its ingredients could also lead to diseases, hair thinning and loss, and scalp damage. Most shampoos contain surfactants called Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) and related compounds. SLS studies have suggested this compound is linked it to serious skin and scalp irritation and disease which can end up in hair loss and damage. This chemical can create nitrate compounds which have been linked to cancer and cell damage. SLS can be secreted  by chemical names such as diethanolime) (DEA, triethanolamine (TEA) and monoethanolamine (MEA). The chemicals can easily enter into the blood stream through the hair follicle opening which are created by the hair itself.  What can appear to a wonderful luxurious lather is actually not only cleaning the hair with a harsh chemical it is also stripping the shaft of vital oils, hair color, and beneficial bacteria which are vital to maintaining a healthy scalp and hair.  After the beneficial bacteria is destroyed it opens up the door for germs which leads to rashes, cradle cap, itchy scalp, dandruff, inflammation and possibly hair loss or other allergic reactions.

The reason hair care companies and manufacturers use these harmful ingredients is quite simple. Because they can!  The industry is under regulated and even naive to the dangers of these chemicals and their negative long term effects. They are giving the consumers what they want by appealing to their misguided belief in the cleaning value of suds and lather.  Shampoo companies can produce the products inexpensively and then mass market them to the consumer and make huge profits in the process. This is all done at the expense of the consumers without regard for the potential harm. Always check the label. Be a mindful and educated buyer and take precautions to protect your children.  Even companies selling products alleging to be natural, organic, vegan are not always  “worry-free”.  To go the extra mile and to create a toxin free product with high quality ingredients is more expensive to produce but well worth the investment. In the end "more bubbles means more troubles".

What do you think is the scariest horror awaiting you this Halloween? Haunted Houses? Scary Movies? Your sugar-crazed children eating their way out of a pile of candy? All good guesses, but perhaps the scariest aspect of Halloween is what we too often and too casually allow to come in contact with our child’s skin … Halloween makeup.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states plainly that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified, and that exposure to lead can jeopardize nearly every system in the body. Even low levels of lead in blood have been shown to affect IQ, ability to pay attention, and academic achievement. And effects of lead exposure cannot be corrected.

That bears repeating - there is no (as in zero) safe amount of lead in the blood of our children. How horrifying is it then that in 2009 the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics issued a report stating that 10 out of the 10 popular children’s face paints contained lead. 10 out of 10! In addition to lead, many of the products tested contained other harmful metals such as nickel, cobalt and chromium, and several products contained hazardous chemicals banned or restricted in other countries and not approved by the FDA.

OK, so now you’ve locked the doors and hidden beneath the bed. But before you tell the kids that this Halloween their costume choices are "bedsheet ghost" and "child with hat" let's explore five steps you can take to enjoy the holiday without sacrificing the fun.

  1. Choose makeup carefully - Yes, 10 out 10 products tested contained lead, but fortunately there are more than 10 choices out there and parents and responsible companies are waking up to the problem of dangerous makeup and face paints. There are now much safer choices on the market, such as Elegant Minerals and Natural Earth Paint. Read the ingredients carefully, and apply the same standards you use when choosing an all natural, paraben-free skin or hair care product for everyday use. Use mineral based makeup as an alternative to heavy metals, and if you’re not sure if a product you are using is safe, check the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetics database. Always know what you are putting on and in your body, and your children.
  2. Perform a patch test - In addition to dangers when absorbed in the bloodstream, many products tested contained highly allergenic ingredients such as chromium. Before applying to your face, place a small amount of the makeup under your arm or at the base of your neck to test for a reaction. Pay special attention to anything that creates a bright or luminescent color and extra special attention to anything used around the eyes and lips.
  3. Consider natural alternatives to makeup - Mix natural food coloring with corn syrup for fake blood, or cornstarch, flour and vegetable shortening for a spooky ghost or skeleton face. Use Original Sprout Natural Hair Gel with glitter for a safe, fun way to achieve a magical, storybook style!
  4. Use a primer - before anything touches your child’s face, use a safe primer as a foundation to create a buffer zone. Consider a zinc-based primer, or even a sunscreen such as Original Sprout’s Face & Body SPF. Just as it protects your skin from the sun, the Face & Body SPF creates a layer of micronized zinc above your skin, preventing face paints from being absorbed through your pores and into your bloodstream.
  5. Remove all makeup as soon as possible - When the trick-or-treating is done, and the candy has all been swapped and largely consumed, it can be tempting to save the cleanup for the following day. Don’t do it! Remove all makeup as soon as possible and strictly adhere to the instructions - the safest removal is not always with soap and water, so be sure to hold on to the packaging for reference, even if you’ve used all of the makeup getting ready for the big night.

We at Original Sprout hope these tips help take some of the horror out of your holiday. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and Happy Halloween!

The first thing to acknowledge when answering the question as to why Original Sprout Face & Body Sunscreen is not 'waterproof' is because as of June 18, 2012, the FDA does not allow any sunscreen to claim to be 'waterproof'. The FDA instead permits only two classifications of 'water resistance' which are either 40 or 80 minutes the user has of expected protection while swimming or sweating. In other words, no matter what a sunscreen claims on the bottle, water greatly reduces its effectiveness, and you will need to proactively reapply to make sure your skin is protected from harmful UVA and UVB Rays.

Why is our sunscreen not water resistant? Technically, our sunscreen is water resistant. The active ingredient in our sunscreen is micronized Zinc Oxide, which is insoluble in water, that means it is resistant to water and will not wash off your skin, unlike chemical sunscreens and mineral based sunscreen which forms a layer on top of your skin. That layer can rub off during water play or sweat-inducing physical activity.

All sunscreen should be re-applied frequently. In many ways, this statement boils down to a faulty premise. Why is our sunscreen not waterproof when other brands advertise they are? The other questions you should ask yourself is are other brands a chemical sunscreen that may be entering your bloodstream, disrupting your hormones, accelerating the aging process and actually contributing to Melanoma and Carcinoma? No? Then is that brand really as waterproof as it claims? Chances are if another brand is a broad spectrum mineral-based sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and contains no endocrine disruptors or nanoparticles, you're going to have to reapply it every couple of hours to really be protected.

Speaking of Nanoparticles, We are often asked if our sunscreen is free of them? The answer is yes, since our Zinc Oxide is micronized, the particles are small enough to rub on clear and prevent the whitening cast reminiscent to the nose of a life guard in the 1970s. However, they are not small enough to be absorbed through the skin or inhaled into the lungs.

With that being said, our sunscreen is as water-resistant as the next, but we are very careful about the claims we make, and at the end of the day we would prefer you not think of any sunscreen as waterproof, water-resistant, what have you. We recommend you reapply sunscreen every hour for fair, easily burned skin, and at least every two hours for darker skin tones. As a friendly reminder please always apply after emerging from the water or working up a sweat.

Fun bonus fact - we have customers in the beauty and film industry who love to use our SPF as a base primer before makeup is applied. It makes sense - not only are you protecting your face from the sun, but you are protecting your makeup from perspiration with a light, invisible non-greasy primer. It's a WIN WIN!

If you've ever emerged from a cool swim on a hot day with a new hair color, you are not alone. The green tinge known as swimmer’s hair is caused by chemicals in swimming pools, most commonly, copper which has been oxidized by chlorine and causes it to bind to the hair.

Once again, the old adage that an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure holds true. The best way to prevent swimmer's hair is to seal the hair shaft prior to swimming so that the chemicals have nothing to bond to. It’s very easy to reverse and treat the chemical process that is caused and get the green out. We suggest these easy tips at home!

Before going swimming, thoroughly dampen hair in the shower & apply Original Sprout's Leave-In Conditioner or Tahitian Hair Oil. This shields the cuticle (hair) with moisture & helps block chemicals from bonding to your hair. After swimming, shampoo & condition with one of our Shampoos andConditioners for silky, hydrated, healthy hair.

Anti-Green Swimmer's Paste One effective treatment for many hair types is to create a homemade paste with a few crushed aspirin tablets, baking soda & warm water. Wash your hair with our Natural Shampoo. Apply the paste to your damp hair. After 5 minutes rinse thoroughly and finish with ourDeep Conditioner to restore moisture & shine.

Weekly Green Detox: Dissolve a few aspirin in a cup of warm water and work through damp hair after shampooing with our Natural Shampoo. Let hair sit for a few minutes and rinse thoroughly. Always condition after treatments or hair can become dry and coarse. Using our Leave-In Conditioner post detox is especially useful to restore softness, moisture & shine.

Make your own anti-chlorine shampoo. The active ingredient in many swimmer’s shampoos is sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). You can make your own by mixing our Hair and Body Baby Wash with baking soda. Five minutes with this do-it-yourself mix leaves our hair feeling amazing! It’s like a deep cleanse, helping to lift away mineral deposits & getting the green out for healthy, revitalized hair. We always follow shampooing with a UV-based conditioner like our Natural Leave-In Conditioner to leave hair brilliant, smooth & silky soft.

Remember unprotected dry hair is like a sponge which readily absorbs chemicals, making it more likely to become green, dry, coarse and prone to damage. The best way to prevent hair from becoming dry is by using moisturizing shampoos & conditioners.

Enjoy, and happy swimming from Original Sprout!

Original Sprout was founded on the principle that no harmful ingredients should ever have to touch your hair, your skin or your family. That principle was the driving force behind the Original Sprout Natural Collection in 2003. Our shampoos, conditioners, body wash, skin cream and styling products contain only natural, organic, vegan ingredients without sacrificing salon grade quality and elegance. In 2009, Original Sprout applied that same principle to its Tahitian Line, and with it we extended our uncompromising standards to the realm of sunscreen and UV protection.

The following ingredients are chemical elements or compounds often found in sunscreens - even those advertised or marketed toward children.

Oxybenzone - In addition to being the most common allergen found in topical sunscreen, Oxybenzone may act as an endocrine or hormone disruptor. This can cause tumors, birth defects, thyroid issues and development issues such as gynecomastia. Hormone disruptors have also been linked to learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder in young children.

Octinoxate - Octylmethoxycinnamate, this ingredient is one of the most common found in sunscreens. It does act as a UV filter, but there is evidence that the stronger and more direct the contact this ingredient has with sunlight, the less effective it becomes. That makes the SPF rating impossible to trust. In addition, there is evidence that this ingredient may actually increase skin-damaging free radicals, which in turn actually increases the damage done by UV rays, even once your are out of the sun.

Homosalate - A compound found in many sunscreens advertised as ‘waterproof’ or ‘water-resistant’, Homosalate emits a greasy texture that is more difficult to wash off than other ingredients. There is evidence that suggests Homosalate causes absorption of pesticides in the human body. There is also evidence to suggest that Homosalate, like Oxybenzone, acts as an endocrine disruptor.

Octisalate - Or Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Octisalate is a chemical UVB filter that provides no resistance to UVA rays, the key drivers of squamous and basal cell carcinomas, and premature aging. Octisalate is also a potential allergen.

Octocrylene - This compound has been known to penetrate the skin and act as a photosensitizer, meaning it can cause more damage, and increase the likelihood of melanoma more than if you had not used sunscreen at all. Some studies have shown that Octocrylene promotes the generation of free radicals, which can damage DNA, accelerate the aging process and shorten lifespan.

If you’ve ever purchased a sunscreen without inspecting the ingredients, chances are it contains one or more of these harmful chemical filters. Fortunately, there is a natural UV filter that is also safe to apply to our skin and our children.

Zinc Oxide - The active ingredient in Original Sprout’s award winning Face & Body 27 SPF Sunscreen is the naturally occurring Zinc Oxide. Zinc Oxide provides excellent protection against both types of UV rays - the long wave UVA waves as well as the short-wave UVB waves associated with sunburn and originally considered the most hazardous to our skin health. But just as important, Zinc Oxide’s protection from the sun’s rays comes without exposing your skin to toxins, hormone disrupters and other dangers. The one caveat with Zinc Oxide is the nanoparticle. Nanoparticles are particles that are so small they can be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream. When choosing a sunscreen, it is important not just to use a safe, natural UV filter, but also to avoid nanoparticles. Simply said, buy Original Sprout! Products which are always safe, natural, free of nanoparticles and ones you can trust.

Original Sprout is proud to announce that our Face & Body 27 SPF Sunscreen is a recent recipient of the 2016 "The Beauty Shortlist" Award for best sunscreen.

Congratulations to Jeanmarie Laracuente!

Thank you to everybody who participated in the Original Sprout Mother's Day Gift Basket Giveaway! With so many wonderful nominees, choosing a winner was no easy task! Please enjoy the inspiring winning response from the son of our Mother's Day Gift Basket recipient, Jeanmarie Laracuente.

I am writing on behalf of my mother. When I was 8 years old, my parents started adopting special needs children. My brother was adopted when I was 8, Then my parents adopted 4 siblings from the same family over the next several years. All of the kids were placed in our home from birth through foster care and adopted by 3 years old. They were all adopted thru the state of NJ. They were all born addicted to drugs and alcohol and had lots of problems. They are also biracial and it took my Mom four years to find the perfect products for them - Original Sprout!

She uses the Curl Calmer and Leave-In Conditioner on all four of them daily. My two sisters also have eczema, so she uses your baby wash and scrumptious baby cream daily. She tells EVERY foster parent about Original Sprout!! My mother had to fight for the services they needed.

These kids received so much early intervention that they have caught up for the most part. Although I have started Community College, my parents still have five children under 10. Since my Mom turned 50 (four years ago), she has been downsized three times. She only worked 6 months in 2015 and was laid off again last month. Raising six kids is very expensive. My father has worked for The Salvation Army as a counselor with drug addicts for 25 years. He doesn't make a lot of money, but it is a very rewarding job and he saves lives. He and my Mom will celebrate 27 years clean and sober this June. Please consider my Mom for a gift basket.

Why Blue?

In the spring of 1989, a grandmother from Virginia began the blue ribbon campaign as a tribute to her grandson, a three-year old who died at the hands of his mother’s abusive boyfriend. Since that time, concerned citizens all over the country have worn blue as a symbol of the need to prevent child abuse and neglect.  Together, we can make a difference.
