Curly hair is beautiful and versatile, especially when it is healthy. In fact, the key to beautiful, natural-looking curls is caring for them gently and keeping them sleek and moisturized. The nature and shape of curly hair makes them more prone to breakage and frizz, so a little extra TLC goes a long way.
Frizz is one of the biggest issues with curly hair. The primary cause of frizz is breakage and damage caused by moisture loss. Many styling products can also make it worse by stripping out much needed natural oils. The results? Frizzy, dry, hard to manage locks. Hair needs moisture too! But…there is an easy solution.
The following tips will help curls retain their natural, ringlet shape and restore thirsty locks, leaving them shiny, soft, and healthy.
- Choose a shampoo that matches your skin and hair’s natural pH. A pH of 5.0-7.5 leaves hair clean without sacrificing your body’s natural moisture and protective properties. Make sure it is a moisturizing shampoo rich in natural soothing botanicals that doesn’t contain drying agents like sulfates. Keep shampoo on the scalp where it is needed most & massage gently. This will leave both your hair & scalp feeling soft & silky.
- If you want to grow your curly hair long, see your stylist more often to have baby trims. She will keep your ends healthy & breakage free, allowing hair to grow longer without becoming damaged.
- Deep condition at least once a week. Apply an ultra-moisturizing deep conditioner to hair after shampooing and leave it on for 10-30 minutes before rinsing. This extra moisture will last all week, smoothing out rough cuticles & helping to repair damaged ends. When the shaft of curly hair is smooth, curls are\able to fall more naturally. Hello smooth, healthy hair!
- Apply a do-it-yourself hot oil hair treatment twice a month. Mix ½ cup virgin coconut oil with 1TBS of mayonnaise in a mug. Place mug in hot (not boiling) water until warm. Apply throughout hair, focusing on lower ¾. Leave on 30 minutes and wash twice with moisturizing shampoo. This not only puts back lost oil, but increases natural shine.
- Use moisturizing styling products. Whip up a healthy cocktail of hair oil, curl calmer and leave-in conditioner and massage throughout damp ends and frizzy spots. Make sure styling products add moisture to your hair rather than drying it out with harsh ingredients. Look for products that contain UV protection (Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride), as sun exposure can fade color and damage hair.
Say goodbye to hard-to-manage curls, and enjoy your healthy, happy, frizz-free hair.

my daughter is african american and white she has curly frizzy hair not course and want to know which shampoo and conditioner will be better for her?
Hi, I have curly (usually frizzy) hair. I like to change it up, so I use both shampoos. My hair is also colored. I tend to use the Natural Shampoo more often, however. After showering, I cocktail the Natural Hair Gel and the Tahitian Hair Oil or the Curl Calmer and the Tahitian Hair Oil. Thank you for your comment!
Hi, I am the head of a new moms/tots group and I have a great interest in all-natural healthcare products that I hope to promote to all my members. Many of my fellow moms group members have curly hair, as do their children. My son, husband and I all have curly hair as well. Our family is a mix of Indian and African-American, leaving our hair texture too fine for black hair products but still in dire need of moisture, frizz control and shine. If you’re open to it, we’d love to sample the products you recommend for our hair type (both adult and children’s products), write reviews and pass along the information to our members. We’d love to try shampoo, conditioner and a leave-in product. Please get in touch. Thanks!
